Julie Makinen is the Los Angeles Times' Beijing bureau chief, reporting on everything from entertainment to politics and the economy across Asia. She previously served as film editor for the newspaper's Calendar section, based in Los Angeles, overseeing all coverage of movies, festivals, the Oscars, reviews, features and Hollywood business news. In her more than 10 years at The L.A. Times as a reporter and editor for the Foreign, Business and entertainment sections, she's seen a lot, from war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan to red carpets in Hollywood. She has also worked for the International New York Times and the Washington Post. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she studied at Cornell, Stanford and UCLA.
